The Chinese video app TiKTok also knwon as Douyin (vibrating sound) in China, got banned in India. TikTok app is already banned in Bangladesh and has been fined in the US for illegally collecting information. In a very short span of time It has made a large number of users in India itself but in a sudden move of the government this app is no longer available in google and iOS app store for Indian users.

What is Tiktok ?

TikTok, is an iOS and Android media app for creating and sharing short videos. Hugely popular with teenagers, it allows people to create short videos with special effects, is hugely popular in India. TikTok was launched by ByteDance in China in September 2016. It had taken 200 days for development and within a year it got 100 million user. With its growing users TikTok tokk over Shanghai based similar apps ‘musical.ly‘ in Shanghai On 9 November 2017.
This video creating and sharing app TikTok is available in 38 languages and had crossed its user more that 500 million by the end of 2018. there are many other video creating and sharing apps like ShareChat, Like etc available in India aprt from tiktok .

why TikTok banned in India ?

A PIL was filed against TikTok citing that this application “encourages pornography” in India on 3 April 2019 and appealed the Government of India to ban the app. Hearing this PIL, the Madras High Court court also noted that children using the app were at risk of being targeted by sexual predators.
Apart from this there were several major incidents took place while creating videos on TikTok .

  1. Md. Salman a 19 year old boy from Delhi lost his life while making a TikTok video when his friend accidently shot him when he was posing with a countrymade pistol.
  2. Tamil Nadu students meet an accident making Tik Tok video on tikTok.
  3. During the ongoing elections two groups in Malapura town of Tamil Nadu ended up fighting with each other over TikTok videos where eight persons were injured.
  4. In Chennai a man trying to make a video on TikTok accidentally slit his throat on camera.
    Having observed the above incidents the indian government sent a letter requesting Apple and Google to abide the High Court’s order and block access to TikTok in its Play store in India.

Though the case is still in the court and the next hearing is on April 24. The spokesman of TikTok said, “He has faith in the Indian judicial system and as the matter is still in the court and is very optimistic about the outcome”. Adding this he also mentioned TikTok employees more than 250 people in India and has plans for more investment in it.
